Created in 1928 and computerised since 1976, World Surface Coatings Abstracts is the industry's premier search tool.

WSCA is produced monthly and is available as:

  • printed book - including subject and patent assignee indexes in each issue, and a separate annual author/patent assignee and subject index volume
  • on-line (available through Dialog or STN)
  • WSCA Alerts (subscriptions to standard or personalised alerts, or one-off searches of the database are available)

Each year 8 000 to 9 000 abstracts are added to the database which covers coatings in their broadest sense – paints, inks, adhesives and raw materials. The subject range includes science, technology, commercial information, environment and legislation.

The database versions of WSCA hold over 300 000 coatings-related abstracts from 1976 onwards. Topics including patents (which make up 35% of its content) cover:

  • Pigments, polymers, additives and solvents
  • Paint types (solventborne, waterborne, powder, etc)
  • Application methods and pretreatment
  • Properties and testing methods
  • Hazards, pollution and legislation
  • Business information including statistics
  • Related products including printing inks and adhesives
