DIY Paint Retailing
The Hague, The Netherlands, 10 - 11 May 2004
Over 90 delegates, mostly with a marketing background, gathered at The
Congress Centre in The Hague to participate
in the first ever conference on DIY Paint Retailing, organised by
the Paint Research Association.
Eighteen papers were presented, split into four ½ day sessions -
- The Market Background
- Legislation and Environmental Issues
- Understanding Colour
- New Products & Services
Two papers in particular were of
wide interest in addressing the needs of the market.
Edward Appleton, Market Research & Communications Manager at Rohm and Haas,
described changes in performance satisfaction levels
and identified new marketing tools and product opportunities.
Another key paper on customer needs was by
Matt Sexton, Acting Director of Home Improvement at B&Q Ltd,
Europe's largest DIY retailer. His talk on "The view from a Paint Retailer"
covered B&Q's approach to VOC's, branding and strategic
partnerships, and their needs in terms of innovation and quality.
The content could be described as essential reading for paint
companies and raw material suppliers wishing to do business with
B&Q.
Very useful market data presentations were made by
Louis McCulloch, previously editor of The Coatings Agenda, on "The
European DIY Retail Market in a Global Context", and
Helma Jotischky, editor of the PRA's Coatings COMET publication, on the
topical subject of Paint Retailing in Central and Eastern Europe.
The paper by
Jacques Warnon, Technical Director of CEPE,
described the current status of the EU Directive on VOC emissions
in Decorative Paints, which will be published shortly, with a
prognosis on how the Directive may be revised in the future to
set stricter limits.

Radcure Coatings and Inks: Application and
Performance
Aspects of Radiation Curing, Harrogate June 1996
Radiation curing technology has become important with
impending legislation restricting the use of solvents.
Its ability to develop coating end-properties almost

radiation curing alongside other clean technologies. The
successful development of the radiation curing industry
depends on its ability to complete with other
technologies with no lowering of performance. A better
understanding of the origin of coating properties and
guidelines for improving technical performance are
therefore essential.
PRA's fourth conference on Aspects of Radiation Curing
had 15 papers concentrating on the application and
performance of radiation-curable coatings that will be
important to users, formulators and to those engaged in
research and development.

Advances in Coatings Technology
Cape Town, March 1996
The first Congress on Coatings for Africa provided a
timely arena to explore the opportunities for trade,
technology transfer and corporate collaboration in this
newly revitalised market. The 22 papers contained in this
volume include overviews of the coatings industry and
market on global, continental and regional scales;
descriptions of novel products and their applications;
reports on measurement techniques; and reviews of
existing technologies and their future development.
Technological Developments in Coatings
3rd Middle East Conference, Dubai, March 1996
The papers presented at the third conference of PRA's
successful Middle Eastern series are concerned with
genuine improvements in technical performance. The 19
papers specifically address the needs of the coatings
industry of the Middle East and Asia. Their subjects
include developments in raw materials for waterborne and
high-solids systems, coatings for metallic cladding and
asphalt surfaces, developments in decorative coatings,
analysis of coatings and coating film defects. Overviews
of the coatings market and of the environmental impact of
high performance coatings are also presented.
Silicones in Coatings
Brussels, January 1996
This conference was the second in PRA's series on High
Performance Coatings Materials. Its 34 papers were
designed to present the leading edge of international
development in silicones and related products which hold
a significant position in the coatings and surface
treatment areas. The conference provided a unique
opportunity for the cross fertilisation of ideas between
industrial chemists, academic researchers, formulators,
specifiers and end users.
The Future of Industrial Coatings: Technical
Innovation vis-à-vis Legislation
15th International Conference
Brussels, November 1995
Environmental considerations have moved to the very
top of today's research agenda. Meeting regulatory
constraints has become the principal guideline for much
development work. The 23 papers presented at this
conference discuss the outstanding problems relating to
environmental legislation. The papers examine new
technical and environmental developments and future
trends.
Clean Coatings Technology
Telford, UK, October 1995
This seminar, held in association with the "Finishing
'95" exhibition, examined the theme of cost
effective material and process technology routes to
compliance with environmental protection requirements.
The twelve papers, presented by paint suppliers,
equipment manufacturers, plant operators and consultants,
address practical issues of particular interest to small
and medium sized paint shop operators in the general
industrial and wood finishing markets. The topics include
compliant coatings, emissions reduction, application,
operating practices and case histories.
Technical Advances in Coatings
1st Latin American Coatings Conference
Mexico City, August 1995
The 17 papers presented at this conference were
addressed to technical and marketing staff of raw
materials suppliers and coatings manufacturers. They
examine recent developments in coatings production
technology, from production equipment and methods,
through raw materials (including pigments, resins,
fillers, curing agents and additives) to developments in
waterborne coatings technology and environmental issues.
Marketing, coating testing and computer aided formulation
were the subjects of presentations in the final session
of this conference.
Advances in Coatings, Inks and Adhesives
5th Asia Pacific Conference
Singapore, May 1995
The 26 papers included in this volume of conference
proceedings are concerned with improvements in technical
performance of coating systems. Novel resins, additives
and coatings formulations are presented. One session of
four papers was devoted to automotive coatings. Papers on
the new technologies including radiation curing, high
solids, powder and waterborne coatings highlight the
latest progress. Health and environmental issues are
emphasised. Papers from authors based in Europe, USA,
Japan, India, Singapore and Hong Kong are included.
Symposium on Powder Coatings
Birmingham, UK, April 1995
The proceedings of this symposium include 13 papers
covering a wide range of topics. Prospects for the
industry, health and safety aspects, application
equipment, charging techniques and directions for future
development are considered. Papers from five powder
coatings manufactures provide details of performance
properties of newly developed resins and hardeners.
Coatings systems for automotive and architectural
applications are highlighted.
New Technologies for Coatings and Inks
3rd Nürnberg Congress
Nürnberg, March 1995
The theme of this conference is advances in
Waterborne, high- solids, radiation-curable and powder
coatings. The proceedings contain 48 papers from Europe
and USA. Separate sessions are devoted to discussion of
low VOC coating systems, high-solids and powder coatings,
pigment and latex technology radiation- curable systems,
additives, two-part systems and anti-corrosive systems.
The conference was organised jointly by Vincentz Verlag (Germany)
and PRA (UK).
Technological Developments in Coatings: Their
Application and Uses
2nd Middle East Conference
Bahrain, January 1995
This conference was organised jointly by the PRA and
the Bahrain Society of Engineers to provide a forum for
effective technology transfer, with particular emphasis
on the requirements of coatings for use in the hot, arid
climatic conditions of the Middle East. Papers presented
by representatives of European companies describe new
waterborne binders for the paint industry, and
developments in resins, pigments, air drying paints,
powder coatings, marine paints and coating equipment. In
addition papers from the Middle East describe materials
suitable for use in road marking, coatings for concrete
and techniques for applying texture coatings. Preliminary
results are presented of a 3-year project at PRA to
develop suitable test methods for evaluating waterborne
coatings performance.
