Scope of the Congress
The scope of the congress includes all new developments in coatings for interior and
exterior wood applications. By extension, the congress will also include developments in wood
preservation, as with suitable design, the preservative and coating can work together to give
a complete wood protection package. Wood continues to be a highly attractive material, being
renewable and "natural", with the potential for high aesthetic value and originality. However,
it also has a very diverse nature, from the different species from which it is derived,
and the growing conditions to which it has been subjected. This must be reflected in the
formulation of coatings designed to protect it and enhance its beauty. Another challenge for
wood coating technologists is the development of suitable coatings for the emerging range of
modified wood materials, aimed mainly at upgrading the performance of softwoods to that of
tropical hardwoods. There is therefore a constant need to develop coatings which satisfy
multiple needs in different woodcoating markets, while at the same time complying with current
legislation aimed at reducing VOC emissions and eliminating potentially hazardous raw
materials in line with REACH.
Purpose of the Congress
The main purpose of the congress is to facilitate innovation in the formulation of
woodcoatings, by bringing together the participants in the supply chain for an in-depth
exchange of knowledge and ideas. For suppliers it is an opportunity to present new
information to their customer base, develop new contacts and hear about the future market needs.
For coating manufacturers, it is an opportunity to enhance their formulating expertise and
provide input to the suppliers for the development of new products and services.
In both cases, the cross-fertilisation of ideas from one discipline to another can often lead
to new insights and profitable collaboration.
Speakers
Authors of new work describing developments in coatings and preservatives for interior
or exterior wood are invited to submit papers to the congress organisers. These will be
selected on the basis of novelty of the subject matter and relevance to the overall subject
of the congress. The following list of relevant topics and themes is presented for guidance,
but is not intended to be comprehensive. Papers which are principally commercial in nature
will not be accepted.
