The 6th Woodcoatings Congress, Amsterdam, 14–15 October 2008

Amsterdam by night

The programme has been published for the sixth PRA Woodcoatings Congress, which this year is being held at the Mercure Hotel Amsterdam Aan de Amstel on 14–15 October. The programme of 35 papers is split into six sessions, spread over the two-day period, giving delegates a wide choice of topical presentations to attend. The parallel sessions are split between Interior and Exterior applications, to minimise the risk of similar papers overlapping. Arrangements are being made for the congress dinner to be held on board a canal boat, which will pick up delegates near the hotel on the Amstel river, prior to an evening cruise around the canals in the centre of the city.

This is a great opportunity to catch up on the latest developments in coatings for wood, and to talk to existing and potential collaborators focused on this industry in a relaxed atmosphere.

UK RTOs aid economy and innovation

Results of an independent study of UK Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) – the intermediate sector – reveal the contribution that they make to the UK economy and transfer of innovation to business and industry. Commissioned by the Association of Independent Research and Technology Organisations (AIRTO), Oxford Economics found that this important sector contributes at least £3bn per annum to the UK GDP. RTOs (such as the PRA) play a unique role in the UK's innovation structure – positioned between academic, and corporate and government end-uses of technology – and in 2006 they were responsible for one third (£400m) of the total extramural expenditure on Research & Development in the UK by UK firms. Approximately 80% of the clients in the survey said that they could not have achieved the same results by working in-house or with a university, that is, without the assistance of RTO resources and services.

AIRTO would like to see greater recognition of the importance of RTOs in the delivery of scientific and technological advances to business and their impact on the economy. The report shows that any weakening of the sector would be extremely detrimental to the UK's innovation performance and as such AIRTO believes that support from the government could empower this sector to achieve more for the UK and its contribution to the EU economy.

Synthesis and Formulation

formulation

Our research and testing work often requires us to formulate paints and inks and to prepare small-scale batches of these materials. We also get involved in the synthesis and evaluation of novel raw materials. The experience and knowledge that we have acquired over the years enables us to offer the following services:-

Coatings manufacturers vary widely in both size and level of expertise. Our formulation service is aimed primarily at smaller manufacturers and those who are contemplating moving into new market areas. We can act solely as information providers by helping you with starting formulations and contact details of raw material suppliers. In addition we can make small-scale batches of products, which either you or we can evaluate.
