Irfab Multi-client Study: Specialist and Functional Architectural Coatings Market 2008–2018
The Specialist and Functional Architectural Coatings Market study will
be the first of its kind on the European and Middle Eastern Markets providing
a unique source of data and insights on this fragmented sector. It is intended
to concentrate on the architectural coatings with functional properties.
The study will bring you the benefit of this vital information base when
formulating your global strategies – from technology to marketing. It will
enable you to identify both the threats from competing technologies and
future opportunities. Thus, the report will represent a reference guide for
your long term strategic planning and provides a basis for more detailed
segmental analysis.
The scope of the study will include Industrial, Commercial, Institutional,
Residential, and Recreational Buildings. Systems with additional functional
purposes to the expected aesthetic and protective properties of coatings
will be described in the study. Whilst an overview will be given on the
global market for architectural and decorative coatings, analysis of standard
interior paints, and Do It Yourself ‘DIY’ market will not be included.

One Day Symposium
Predicting the Service Life of Organic Coatings – Options and Constraints
21 January 2009, Hampton, UK
The coatings industry is undergoing considerable change in responses to legislative action,
and the emergence of new technologies, hence the need for sound predictive methodologies is
higher than ever before.
The objective of the Symposium is to provide a forum in which some examples of different
techniques and methods used to investigate durability and service life are presented in the
context of alternative strategies for investigation.
The symposium will also have elements of a workshop and will be of interest to scientists,
technologist and marketing personnel charged with introducing new products to the market
where durability and longevity are a premium.
The symposium should be of value to established practitioners of durability investigation but
would also be of value to newcomers requiring an overview of the many issues involved. It is
hoped that delegates will be willing to participate in discussion and also contribute to the
event with their own experiences, and provision for this has been made in the programme. The
full programme will be available on our website shortly:

SHE Alert
Czech President vetoed Czech law on REACH
President Vaclav Klaus vetoed an amended Czech law to comply with the EU Directive 2006/121/EC and Regulation 1907/2006 on
REACH. Klaus said the concept was wrong and too costly with respect to
potential benefits and the link with the protection of
people's health and safety is at least very doubtful.

Technical Services
Coatings are subject to microbial attack before and after application. Fungi, algae and bacteria can
thrive in liquid paints in the tin and on paint films after application.
The Microbiology section of PRA Technical Services has traditionally specialised in the fight against
microbial spoilage of paints and paint films. This expertise has now been developed to include all types
of surfaces and coatings in the paint and related industries.
In addition to this specialised role the section has also been at the forefront of developments in
hygienic/antimicrobial coatings and surfaces: both in terms of testing new products and in the development
of new and relevant test methodology.
PRA is therefore able to provide a unique service specialising in all aspects of microbiology relating
to the coatings industry and beyond, and is able to carry out a wide range of standard and in-house test
methodology. Services include:-
- Contract research
- Troubleshooting investigations
- Comparative evaluation of biocides
- Evaluation of materials for fungal, bacterial and algal resistance
- Investigation of microbial contamination
- Microbial assessment of hygienic coatings

One Day Symposium
Predicting the Service Life of Organic Coatings – Options and Constraints
21 January 2009, Hampton, UK
See News Item above.
2-day International Conference & Mini-Exhibition
Measurement and Testing of Coatings
12/13 May 2009, Birmingham, UK
This conference will re-emphasise the critical importance of using well validated testing
methodologies, examine areas of difficulty in testing coatings and highlight new approaches to
coatings testing. The conference is an ideal opportunity for suppliers and users of testing
equipment to discuss problems and solutions in a creative atmosphere, with the ever topical
objective of reproducing in the laboratory effects observed in the real world.
We are seeking papers from a broad range of companies, including: equipment manufacturers, paint
manufacturers, end-users of coatings, quality consultants and academics. Authors of new work
describing developments in testing and measurement of coatings are invited to submit papers to
the conference organisers. These will be selected on the basis of novelty of the subject matter
and relevance to the overall subject of the conference. Further conference information and
submission details will be available on our website shortly:
www.pra-world.com/conferences/ or contact
Janet Saraty
for more information.
Architectural Coatings Conference, October 2009, Location TBC
Papers covering technical and marketing innovations in architectural coatings will be included in the programme, with an
emphasis on compliant coatings and sustainability. Speakers and delegates will be drawn from the entire supply chain, including architects and retailers, to debate the shape of architectural coatings in the future.
To register your interest in attending these events please contact
Janet Saraty
PRA are again assisting Vincentz Network in producing the programme for the sessions on coatings at this major industry event, which runs in parallel to the European Coatings Show (31 March-2 April 2009). The Call for Papers has been issued and may be accessed via www.european-coatings-show.com/callforpapers. The deadline for submission of title and abstract is 1 September 2008.
Another option is to submit material in the form of a poster, which would be suitable for presentations of a more commercial nature, or where the new content is limited. Poster submissions also need to be approved by the programme committee. Presenters of posters selected from industry can participate in the full congress for the reduced fee of 310 euros. There will be no charge for the presenter of a poster selected from academia to attend the full congress.
A summary of the poster presentations will be included in the final congress programme, so the deadline for submitting a poster presentation is the same as for submitting a paper. A paper describing the poster will be required in February 2009, for inclusion in the conference proceedings.
An expanded interactive poster session at Nuremberg in 2009 follows the success of this session at the American Coatings Conference in Charlotte in June 2008, where over 20 displays were available for delegates to visit during two dedicated sessions, after the oral presentation programmes on the first and second days of the congress.
For information on PRA Conferences or to obtain copies of Proceedings from recent PRA Conferences, please contact Janet Saraty, Tel: +44 (0)20 8487 0811, Fax: +44 (0)20 8487 0801.
