Dirt Pick-Up: The Environmental Soiling Of Surface Coatings

Note: Sponsors of this project have access to the Dirt-Pickup MiniWeb. Contact Richard Kennedy for a password.

The work programme will update and build on a previous PRA investigation: 'The Soiling of Paint Films' by G Holbrow, reported in 1981. The work integrates with other work carried out under the research themes of APPEARANCE and DURABILITY, i.e. microbial spoilage assessment, AFM studies, image analysis, and predictive degradation measurement during natural and artificial weathering.

The project is looking at the development of test methods while contributing to an increased understanding of the science underlying the soiling of surface coatings through dirt pick-up.

The content of the work programme has been established on the basis of discussions and feed- back from the industry. The work programme started in the Summer of 2000 and is scheduled to continue for four years.

Currently there are thirteen industrial companies sponsoring the programme, who monitor and direct the project via regular progress meetings.

At this early stage additional sponsors are welcome.
