PRA is a partner in a recently approved DTI funded project, which the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) will is undertaking over 36 months.
Electronic circuit boards are increasingly being used in harsh exposed environments. Protective conformal coatings, applied to shield the sensitive circuitry, require stringent testing to ascertain their life-time performance reliability. It is, for example, known that the coating’s function may be impaired through permeation by contaminants but procedures are needed to both quantify and interpret the effects.
The project aims to deliver robust testing protocols based on scientific investigation of the underlying degradation.
Suppliers of conformal coatings together with resin and additive manufactures will be affected by any new test protocols and by standards derived from them. To ensure the project’s work programme is relevant to the realistic needs of industry the DTI require that an Industrial Advisory Group (IAG) is established. Application for membership of the group is open to all companies with an interest in conformal coatings and the protection of electronic assemblies.
