Previous work carried out by PRA has shown that when paint films are exposed to a low temperature oxygen plasma they degrade in a manner similar to that observed during natural exposure.
Oxygen plasma produces extremely rapid degradation and 15 minutes exposure is equivalent to several years natural weathering.
The overall objectives of this project was to develop a method for ultra-rapid weathering in terms of physical and chemical properties.
Six pairs of industrial and decorative coatings were subjected to oxygen plasma erosion and the results compared with natural exposure data. The oxygen plasma technique gave the correct result for four of the six pairs.
At present the detailed results are available to the Sponsors only but it is planned to publish a report of the work by 2003.
