PRA's one-day symposium in September 2001, and an open meeting in January 2002, provided opportunities to canvas supplier and user views on the role and requirements for hygienic surfaces. As a result, three specific interest areas were identified, namely:
(1) Definition of risk
(2) Test Methodology
(3) Available Technologies
The interest was such that PRA, in collaboration with IMSL (a privately owned consultancy & testing company), formulated a research programme focused onto non-absorbent hygienic coatings and surfaces (which was presented and discussed at the January meeting).
Aims of the project, and especially tasks for the first 12 months, will be to generate quantified sampling data from diverse target surfaces, to extend/develop methodology suitable to deliver relevant defined performance measurements, and to identify & assemble available hygienic surface technologies to be characterised according to their perceived role and principle of action.
As additionalities, quantified working definitions of the in-service role and requirements of surface protection systems, and suggestions for improving the effectiveness of hygienic surface systems should be provided.
Public sector funding was sought to run the project, however it was not found to be forthcoming or available from current initiatives of either UK government or the EU. Therefore, a private research project has been proposed, to be funded directly by industry at a level of £6000 per sponsor per year for 2 years.
Further Information
Since the project is still in its early stages, additional sponsorship will be welcomed. Interested companies should contact Richard Holman. The project proposal is available for download (~11 KB).
